A Slow-Living Guide to the Holidays

This holiday season, I’m really trying to embrace the little things more, instead of letting the hustle and bustle-ness of our society take over this magical time. I want to slow down, be present, and enjoy myself, and you should too!

I’ve been doing plenty of crafting, decorating, and cooking in a way that feels intentional, sustainable, and fulfilling. I’m going to share some of those festive activities here in hopes that you’ll give it a go, too!

Gifting

A few DIY gift ideas that are heartfelt, eco-conscious, and adorable

Homemade Herb Salt

This is such a cute gift and it’s super easy to make! Use to season chicken, potatoes, etc. You can add more flavors like garlic, lemon zest, or thyme.

  • 1 cup kosher or flaky salt

  • 2 tbsp. fresh chopped rosemary

Blend in a food processor until very fine. Spread on a baking sheet and bake at 225 for 30 minutes to dry out the rosemary. Blend in food processor again and store in a jar.

Homemade Recipe Cards

I’m planning to make my own recipe cards with some of my favorite recipes on them. It’s a such a fun way to add personality to a gift!

3 ways to do this:
1. use old paper, stickers, etc.
2. make a design online and print
3. hand-paint a cute border

House Portraits

If you’re gifted at painting or drawing, this is such a heartfelt gift idea. If you’re looking to outsource, here are two Iowa artists that I recommend!

Crafting

While it’s tempting to buy new holiday decor, try thrifting some or make your own!

Dried Orange Garland

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Paw Print Ornaments

Another easy and fun craft! I decided to paint ours instead of adding food coloring. Directions below.

Orange Tree Centerpiece

The one in the video looks waaay better than mine, but I still had a good time making this one.

Fabric or Paper Chains

These DIY chains are taking over the Internet (or at least my feed). I can’t wait to make these this holiday season using old fabric and paper scraps!

Cooking & Baking

A few of my favorite festive recipes

Cranberry Jalepeno Meatballs

Add all ingredients to a crockpot, mix, cover, and cook on high for 4 hours or low for 6–8 hours. So easy and yummy!

Salted Pistachio Choc. Chunk Cookies

I’ve definitely posted about these cookies before; they’re just THAT GOOD. Plus they’re green 🌲

This year, I’m going to make a batch of these and put them in a thrifted tin container as a gift!

Rosemary Candied Walnuts & Pistachios

I am going through a pistachio phase, clearly, but you can use any nuts you want for this. I made these for our Thanksgiving charcuterie board! These would make a great homemade gift!

  • 1/2 cup roasted pistachios

  • 1/2 cup walnuts

  • 2 tbsp. maple syrup

  • 1 tbsp. brown sugar

  • 1 tbsp. finely chopped rosemary

  • pinch of salt

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and place in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir for about 15 minutes or until the nuts are candied. Place on parchment lined pan and let cool. Store in a jar.
